Mr Liang shuming is a prestigious ideologist, philosopher, educationist, one of the leading representatives of early modern Neo-Confucianism,social activist, democratic and patriotic person in modern and contemparory times. His ideological system is broad and profound, and has great achievements in Buddhism,Confucianism, philosophy and Sociology. Mr Liang’s medical thought contributes to his whole academic thoughs,as he said by himself:Chinese Confucianism,Western Life Philosophy and medicine are the root of my thoughts. Actually, compared with Confucianism,Buddhism and philosophy, his medical thought is only a small part, yet plays an quite important role in affirming the value of Chinese medicine, exploring the origin of Chinese medicine, comparison and combination of Chinese and Western medicine and practicing medical view of life, and therefore deserves special research. However, study of Mr Liang’s medical thoughts are rarely seen in recent years. His medical thoughts have been ignored and this can be a great pity. Based on the above situation, this article arranges, discusses and reviews Mr Liang’s medical view of life from several aspects listed below so that people can have a general understanding of Mr Liang’s medical thoughts. Chapter1, analyzing the origin of Mr Liang’s medical thoughts from two perspectives:first is to analyze the impact of the historical background, social ideology, family education, personality and social experience on his medical thoughts. Influence of the western culture; father Liangji’s influence of Confucianism and traditional Chinese culture; weak in health from childhood, and lost his mother and grandmother when he was very young; shattering of his dream of saving China and Chinese people when he first enter society made him change focus into learing Buddhism, life philosophy,Confucianism and caused his interest in learning medicine. These are all his motivation and source of doing medical research.Second is to summarize the general studying method of Mr Liang to analyze the basis of his medical thought. The characteristics of Mr Liang’s general studying methods are: understand about the nature of life and society from weishi theory of Buddhism; keep thought and practice be at the same level; keep transcendence and pragmaticality exist at the same time; adopt the researching method of comparison of east and west, and more aspects; emphasizing on innovation and independent academic spirit. Chapter2, discussing Mr Liang’s medical research experience and his academical thought of medical view of life.Mr Liang’s medical thoughts and his cultural thoughts can both go into his view of life, and therefore bear a strong life attribute. His view of medical life and his view of cultural life were built at the same time. Initially there was only a philosophical framework, and he enriched them gradually during later times.Mr Liang ’s medical thoughs mainly consist of:Chinese medicine originated from Taoism, and exactly from the wisdom of inner heart exploration. The method of Chinese medicine is xuanxue, which views life from the perspective of combination of heaven and human-beings and continuous changes and flowing of everything in nature. And this makes Chinese medicine much closer to the truth of life than western medicine. He said that western medicine focuses on human body, especially every single part of the body, and this can only get the external signs of life rather than understanding the rules of life inside human body and life itself. The advantage of Chinese medicine is that it understands about life, while the disadvantage is that its theory doesn’t only come from abstract thinking and reasoning but also from the experience of Taoism, and this process can’t be understood, practiced and proved by every common person. Thus Chinese medicine bocomes the representative of early-maturing culture, and brought about the consequences of being difficult to learn, easy to be misunderstood, easy to lose the learning method, and common doctors tend to know only about the method itself instead of knowing both the method and where the method comes from. And this situation has been enhanced during the times when western thoughts are prevalent in China. These views of Mr Liang were not only ahead of his times and profound enough to get to the point of differences of Chinese and western medicine at his times, but is also inspirational to us almost one hundred years later.Mr Liang compared Chinese and western medicine from different views of life, different objects, different methods, different expressions of Chinese and western medical languages. He thinks that the levels of Chinese and western medicine’s views on life are different, which makes it almost impossible to communicate between Chinese and western medicine both in academical ideology and methods. But they still will blend and get into each other eventually. It will take a long time to wait for western medicine to understand about the nature of life. If this kind of theory is reasonable, it would be very significant to us. Chapter3,disucussing about Mr Liang’s physical and mental health and his medical practical view of lifeMr Liang’s physical and mental condition can be summarized in three sentences:from a short life span to a long life span. From being self-conceited to being gentle and mild. From intractable insomnia to an happy healthy old man. The reasons for these tremendous changes are:first, he emphasized on spiritual cultivation a lot, which is the main subject of Confucianism, he also absorbed the theory of preserving one’s health means preserving one’s thinking first in Taoism into his own practice. Second, because of suffering from insomnia, he emphasized on physical exercises, and combined the cultivation of being quiet and being motive together, thus can make one’s vitality develop and spread well.Mr Liang achieved greatly in preserving his health. Many people went to consult him in his later years. He summarized his preserving methods into:eat less and exercise more; keep an gentle and mild personality; learn and think until old while living old. We can see how he put the above theories into his everyday life in his diary. We modern people who are always busy rushing every day and often over-consume our energy and life can certainly benefit a lot from Mr Liang’s thoughts and experience.
