Xanthium sibiricum Patr. ex widd (Chiese name "Cang’er-zi), belongs to the Compositae family. It is an important Chinese traditional medicine recorded in the pharmacopoeia of People’s Republic of China. The fruits have often been used to treat nasal diseases. However, we have little material about the chemical constituents of Xanthium sibiricum Patr. ex widd, and little research report its quality standard intensively. With this in mind, we now make the further study of constituents of this medicine, in the same time, we built up its systemic quality standard. These will be very useful for quality control of medicinal materials. The main results are shown as follow:1. The powder of fruits of Xanthium sibiricum Patr. ex widd was extracted with 75% ethanol. The solvent extraction together with column chromatography was used for isolation of chemical constituents. From the layer of n-butanol extract,14 compounds were isolated and purified, by means of spectroscopic analysis and physiochemical properties,8 of them were identified as daucosterol(1)、Phloroglucinol dehydrate(2)、fumaric acid ethyl ester(3)、methylchlorogenate(4)、xanthiside(5)、3’,4’-disulfatedcarboxyatractyloside(6)、3’,4’-dedisu-lphated atractyloside(7)、7-glucopyranose(2-1)-rhamnosyl-4’-methyoxylisoflavone(8). There were 4 compounds isolated from the plant for the first time.2. Xanthiside is one of a special compound in Xanthium sibiricum Patr. ex widd. As a result, we make Xanthiside as a chemical reference substance, then, draw up its preparation and quality standard.3. Develop a method for the determination of the content of Xanthium sibiricum and stir-fried seeds of Xanthiunm sibiricum by HPLC. The method is accurate and reliable than the former, which upgrade it’s quality control standard.
