The usage of ‘verb+object+numerical phrase’, which is frequentlyseen in Chinese expression, spells the problem of how to place the objectand the complement in the ‘verb-object’ structure. As for the issue, manyscholars have done intensive research through various perspectives in thepast few decades. Some people took the approach of synchronicperspective to make an analysis of both object’ and complement’s naturesbefore deciding their individual order in a sentence. In the meanwhile,some people dealt with the impact of a verb upon its ensuing objectivecomplement in terms of verbs’ classification. There are also some peoplewho make use of diachronic perspective to analyze the formation of‘verb-object phrase+complement’ structure occasioned by syntacticformat. It can be seen from previous research that a lot of work has beenundertaken in this field through the perspectives of grammar andsemantic. The debated structure of expression has been givenreinterpretation by the introduction of prosodic syntax in the concernedfield. The prosodic syntax believes the application of rhythm will imposea limit on syntax, and consequently put forward with the theory of‘nuclear stresses.The dissertation will make an analysis of the structure‘verb+object+numerical phrase’, particularly its trisyllable, from theperspective of rhythm based on theories of prosodic syntax. The analysis is expected to be divided into the following sections: disyllabicverb+pronoun+quantity complement, monosyllabic verb+monosyllabicnoun+quantity complement, and monosyllabic verb+quantitycomplement+disyllabic noun. In addition, the ‘assign principle’ of‘nuclear stress’ theory will be applied to analyze the mentioned structures.More possibilities and reflection are expected to be born with the analysisfrom prosodic syntax, creating better inference of the involved structureand presenting clear conclusion. The dissertation is aimed at applying thedue conclusions into the field of teaching Chinese as foreign languageand bringing better teaching methods about the structure.
