The Translation Literary Sketch Karma "and Elucidated

This thesis contains two parts. In the first part, I translate Huang Yongyu’s prose Sketch Stories from Chinese to English. In the second part, I write a paper to analyze my translation, and the name is The Analysis of Proper Nouns’ Translation Strategies.As a famous Chinese painter, Huang Yongyu has made great achievements in painting. Also, he is a good writer and has writing a lot of outstanding essays. In Sketch Stories, the author wrote about his personal experience in learning painting and memorizing many teachers and friends who had helped him. His writing is fresh and profound, and the author is as agreeable as if he was chatting with his readers. Translating this essay from Chinese to English is of great significance. The English-speaking readers can witness how a naughty boy grew up to be a great artist, can feel the sincere characters of Chinese painters, and can gain knowledge of Chinese history and society.After translation, there is a paper analyzing proper nouns’translation strategies. As an "insignificant" group, proper nouns are never paid enough attention to in translation. However, a good translator can not be careless in translating them, which indeed demonstrate the choice of translating strategies and the translator’s value orientation. In Huang Yongyu’s Sketch Stories, there are a lot of proper nouns, including names of people, places, paintings, books, etc. In this thesis, I will take the translation of Sketch Stories as an example, to explore the usage of domestication, alienation and the theory of functional equivalence in proper nouns’translation.
