Based on the experience of translating The Unconsoled, this thesis first introduces what is "translationese". The notion of translationese first appeared in Eugene A. Nida’s The Theory and Practice of Translation. Some definitions by some famous scholars, such as Fang Mengzhi, Liu Miqing in China tell us that Translationese is typically caused by an excessively literal approach to the translation process or an imperfect knowledge of target language. And then it explains the phenomenon of translationese with the examples cited from The Unconsoled. The comparison between the original translation and the revised one reveals three reasons that contribute to it. All these three aspects can be the causes, they are:the ignorance of the differences between English and Chinese, the misunderstanding of the original texts, and a poor grounding in Chinese. Also, the thesis explores the ways to avoid translationese. We should keep in mind that attitude is everything, we should keep learning to widen the range of knowledge, we should keep practicing to master the strategies in translating, we should keep proofreading to avoid mistranslations. Finally, the paper suggests that we improve our translation by eliminating translationese by persistent endeavors.
