The Poem Theory of Canglang, written by Yan Yu, the Song Dynasty literary theorist, was a book which had a more theoretical system in the history of the literary theory in Song Dynasty. This book not only preserved the previous poetic essence, but also contained Yan Yu’s unique insights of the poetry theory so as to become the top of the writes in the poetry theory area. However, there were some criticism to The Poem Theory of Canglang, largely due to the lack of systematically understand to the theory. Therefore the task of this treatise is to give a systematic and comprehensive explanation to poetry theory by the all-round understanding of the book.The first mission to study Yan’s theory is to make sure the nature of the book. The Poem Theory of Canglang is like the teaching book which tells the learner how to learn. On the other hand, it is also an aesthetic book which explains what standard would be suitable to the appreciating activities. The readers of this book should pay attention to the flexible switch of the two aspects.This paper consists of four parts. The first chapter is to make a summary about the research generalization on The Poem Theory of Canglang. The second chapter revolves the theoretical background, mainly from three aspects, those are the accumulation of Yan Yu’s theory, the effects of Jiangxi School of the poetry and the influence of Zen. The third chapter is the emphasis of this paper, and it is a systematic study of the entire development process of the poetry theory, which contains basic components like reading universally and deeply and intuition and taste on poems. This process of the poetry intuition is greatly enriched by using some Zen concept. The fourth chapter discusses the significance and shortcomings of the poetry intuition.In short, The Poem Theory of Canglang points out two basic questions. One is what poetry is really good poetry, as well as the other one is how to create outstanding poetry.
