In the past ten years, the higher vocational education in China was paid growing attention.However, due to the poor teaching conditions and the weak foundation of study, there are a greatnumber of underachievers in vocational institutions. The survey shows that the number ofunderachievers is the highest in higher vocational institutions. So it is imperative to study theEnglish underachievers in the higher vocational institutions. At the same time, more attention ispaid to the non-intellective factor in which will quality is the crucial factor of it. Under thecurrent English teaching atmosphere, many English teachers do not lay their emphasis on thesurvey of the will quality of English underachievers and do not attach the importance to whatextent the will quality will influence the English underachievers’ scores either. Therefore, interms of the low grades of English underachievers’ and the number of English underachievers’increasing year by year, it’s time to investigate and analyze the situation of their will quality,which in turns will find a new way to transform the English underachievers.This thesis is on the basis of investigation of English underachievers and will quality fromhome and abroad, the Humanism theory and Self-efficacy theory as foundation, the sophomorestudents of a higher vocational institution in Jining city as the research object. The researchmethods adopted in this thesis is literature study, questionnaire survey and individual interview.What’s more, quantitative and qualitative analysis had done by the author. Based on thepreliminary study of the will quality, the result indicated that the sophomore students’ willquality of this school is very low. And the four components of will quality (consciousness,decisiveness, self-control, perseverance) show different degrees of influence to English learning,among which the self-control and perseverance has the largest influence to the sophomorestudents. The will quality and English grades are improved after training their will quality whichshowed that the will quality of non-intellective factor is the cause of the English underachieversgot the low grades. At the same time, it provides the empirical evidence to transform the Englishunderachievers, and has a guiding significance to improve the underachievers’ English grade aswell.
