Ever since Yan Fu established the three renowned standards for translation," faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance", people have presented various viewpoints without coming to any conclusion. This paper gives an analysis of the three standards on the basis of the translation of Valperga, trying to clarify their respective meanings as well as their internal relationships from the perspective of literary translation, and explores the translation strategies a literary translator should adopt while following the guidelines of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance". |
