An excellent poet must be a good listener who is also good at expressing himself. Luo Yihe is just one poet who manages to merge listening and expressing together in a perfect way; he is not only a sincere listener, but also a wonderful singer. His listening and singing are self-conscious and initiative, derived from his deep instinctive throb at the world in the depth of his heart; they are the exploration, isolation and final presentation of the mysterious world after his willingly making the inner mind dive into and spread in the inside world. He listens to the growing of all objects in the natural world, to the sincere affections of human beings, to the human morals, spirits as well as the origin of culture, and he also expresses what he has heard with his special voice, presenting his most authentic poetic world to readers. At the same time, he has richened his definition of "listener" as the listener of Hai Zi.One thing is that in different periods what Luo Yihe listened and sang are actually different; he has made certain adjustments in poetry creation as time goes on, however, the adjustments and changes in different periods are radically consistent. His early poems are praising life in a positive way, full of confidence in the future, displaying an energetic force and brilliance of idealism, to help people move forward with hope, courage and power. After two years’ meditation in1984and1985, the poetry themes of Luo become heavier than that of his early creations. His meditation turns much more to his focus on human existence, to his doubts of life and death and an outlook toward the future developments of Chinese modern new poetry. His poetry, stemming from his spirits and ending in his spirits, demonstrates its depth with the strong sense of history and responsibility. But there is still some sudden upward force in his heavy low moaning in the late creations; Luo Yihe in the late period is much more like a high flyer in the dark abyss, who resists darkness and struggles for light; he is not only a poet, but an adventurous and kind-hearted cavalier. The recurring images in his poems together display his spirit Utopia, and the interpretation of them is just an exploration of Luo’s sprit Utopia as a poet. This paper, based on the poems and poetry criticism of Luo Yihe in All Poetry of Luo Yihe as well as relevant studies of Luo Yihe, starting from his double roles of listener and singer as a poet, makes a general introduction of his poetry creation in both early and late periods, respectively elaborates different implications of his listening and singing in different periods, and also deeply explores his spiritual world and perceives his cognition, experience and feelings toward the world and life as well as soul of Luo’s poetry by analyzing the recurring images in his poems.
