At the Fahai Temple and the Muwi Temple are temple murals that representmural arts of China’s Ming Dynasty and Korea’s Chosun Dynasty. Because temple murals are painted directly onto such a unique canvas, it becomes a part of the building itself. A mural is created by firstly setting up the wall using China’s and Korea’s traditional methods, and then painting on the dry surface. The murals of Fahai Temple have an overall stable composition and a very realistic portrayal of people. The brush strokes are elaborate and the techniques masterly. The colors made excellent use of natural pigments and gilts only to add to its splendor. The murals of Muwi Temple show strong and quick brush strokes that show the free spirit of the artists. Reds, greys, and yellows make up most of its colors, and the shapes of clothes and the decoration of beads have been simplified. The people in the painting have a very natural pose and their expressions are comical. The Water Moon Form paintings of Fahai Temple and Muwi Temple both share similar religious functions but show difference in its expressions. First, the Water Moon Form painting of Fahai Temple has very detailed brush strokes, and the techniques used for illustrating people and the surroundings are extremely skillful. It has also made use of a large variety of colors. The lines used to portray people are smooth and shows beautiful femininity. On the other hand, the murals of Muwi Temple made use of powerful and rapid brush strokes, and all the other decorations have been simplified. Even the people are portrayed with broad faces and thick necks giving the painting an overall strong sense of masculinity. Thus, the development of this thesis will be based on China’s Ming Dynasty’s Fahai Temple and Korea’s Chosun Dynasty’s Muwi Temple in order to understand the creation process, the forms and composition of people, and the expression techniques of colors in murals, while also trying to gain understanding on the two famous murals through comparison analysis of their Water Moon Form paintings.
