As a material carrier of the national spiritual culture, National costume could reflect the nation’s politics, economy, religious beliefs, the culture and so on. The minority called Diqiang also has the same significance. In a long living and production time, Diqiang ancestors used their own intelligence that created and developed their unique costume design. There is no unified national costume in Diqiang. It finally comes into being such a different costume style and decoration characteristics according to diverse national culture, their religious beliefs and living environment, which therefore provides a special worth on studying their art aesthetics and culture. It will be more important and meaningful to analyze the deeper culture connotation and find out the inner difference and correlations between these seemingly ordinary but full of mysterious motif symbols.The whole article aims to analyze the geometric patterns of Diqiang, which is stated from two mainly aspects-basic shapes and constitutional bones. First, collect the motifs of Diqiang costume and sum up the different geometric patterns that belong to several minorities in the so-called Diqiang family tree. Next, it is necessary to analyze the extracted geometric basic shapes by using the theory of composition school. To reveal the nature in it, we take a close research on some motifs such as eight-angle motif, looped line, rhombus, dogteeth-looking and so forth. All of these researches are completed by the ways of standalones, fourth party continuous and second consecutive style. Thirdly, depending on some theories of mathematics like segmentation methods and lacing methods to study the motifs of constitutional bones, especially the basic and continuous shapes. Importantly the purpose is to locate the regular law hiding in composing these designs so as to categorize them into geometric basic shapes and bones’permutation and combination issues. Finally, through comparing some representative geometric patterns of national costume in Diqiang, we may get a clear understanding of the similarities and differences. It is well worth revealing the primary factors such as the nation culture and natural environment that lead to the similarities and differences in designing national motifs, for they do have their own cultures and own religious beliefs. Besides, the living environment is also one of important factors that influence the national costume motifs. In short, the article provides an overall and systematic analyzation and research about the geometric patterns in costume design of Diqiang family from surface to the center.The final part describes the inheritance and modern applications of Diqiang costumes, and at the same time discuss some new thoughts. Sincerely hope that by studying Diqiang costume motifs, we could extract some typical national elements in order to provide much more inspirations and materials for our modern designs, and also help to comprehend the deep meanings of our traditional culture.
