This thesis aims to reclassify unconventional use of personalpronouns in Modern Chinese and describe their rules and motivation.Personal pronouns are not used randomly. They refer to certain realityand their use has to comply with certain quantitative and qualitativecriteria. In the actual speech, conventional rules are deliberatelyviolated in order to reach certain rhetoric and ideographic functions,resulting in a lot of unconventional use of personal pronouns, such astheir transferred reference, generalization, tokenization the presentthesis focuses on.As a result of a series of subjectivism and grammaticalization,new unconventional use of personal pronouns come into being, someeven producing new configuration and tokenization due to thepragmatic and cognitive effects. This thesis focuses on those personalpronouns that do not refer to the alleged objects in the context, fromthe perspective of their transferred reference and generalization andtokenization.Chapter One conducts a detailed study on transferredreference of personal pronouns from the perspective of cognitiveapproach. Chapter Two focuses on the generalization of personalpronouns, and their constructions. Chapter Three discusses tokenizationof personal pronouns. Chapter Four deals with motivation ofunconventional use of personal pronouns from cognitive and subjectiveperspective. The systematic study on unconventional use of personalpronouns hopes to be able to further tracing studies.
