It is generally believed that the teaching and learning of a secondlanguage starts with pronunciation. The teaching and learning ofpronunciation in TCSL (the abbreviation for Teaching Chinese as aSecond Language) is of irreplaceable importance for the primaryphase, which settles the pavement for cultivating communicativeproficiency and mastery of the language. In the Chinese pronunciation teaching and learning practice, thephenomenon of “foreign accents” bothers both Chinese teachers andforeign students greatly. The main reasons responsible for the “foreignaccents” are Chinese tones and intonations. It seems that if theproblems of tones and intonations were solved, then it would be mucheasier to teach the Chinese pronunciation and the foreign students canspeak more standard and idiomatically. However, the results of Chinesepronunciation teaching are far from being satisfactory. Therefore, itbecomes urgent to search for new methods from other perspectives.Researches from many disciplines have been finding out that theties between music and language, especially Chinese language areintertwined. Many successful experiments have also shown that it isquite possible and crucial to apply music to language teaching andlearning. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to further investigatethe connections between music and Chinese pronunciation, thusfinding out some new methods for the Chinese pronunciationinstruction. The error analysis for the foreign students was conductedfrom the perspective of “Inter-language” and “Input Hypothesis Model”.It raises the transformation between Chinese tones as well as rhythmsand music for pronunciation teaching and also puts forward thetextbook design based on the three sides of teachers, students andtextbooks. Experiment was also conducted under the textbook design and results of the study indicated that the student did achieve greatersuccess in this musical way. There are three parts in this thesis:Part One is the preface. It mainly concerns about the reasons forchoosing this topic, the research area and the literature resources, theories and methods adopted. Part Two is the main body, includingfour chapters: Chapter One is the foundation for the whole research.Three questions were discussed: the relationship between music andChinese language; the functions of music in education; the functions ofmusic in language education. In Chapter Two, the transformationbetween Chinese tones and music was introduced. Chapter Three alsodiscussed about the transformation between Chinese rhythm andmusic. As the most important part, Chapter four explained theoriesabout TCSL, the error analysis, our textbook design, the experiment andits result in detail. Part Three is the conclusion for the whole thesis, whichtalked about the requirements for teachers and students, as well assome new topics offered for further discussion.
