In contemporary sculpture and installation art, the concept of space is no longerlimited to physical space, but has come to include open or negative space and thesurrounding environment. This thesis explores the relationship between emotion andspace in Louise Bourgeois’ sculpture. This embodies a change from the traditionalview of sculpture as an object in the round, and is exploited by contemporary artists asa new space for expressing emotion..This research follows Bourgeois’ life and work chronologically, examining theartist’s living conditions and inner feelings throughout the different stages of hercareer. Bourgeois’ work suggests a new concept of space, imbued with emotion. Thisthesis will analyze how artists take advantage of specific spatial elements to conveyemotion.
