In sculpture,"reality" refers to the shape of the subject and the space defined by the outer contour of the subject, i.e. the positive space of sculpture."Void," on the other hand, refers to the space other than the positive space of the subject, i.e. the negative space of sculpture. This thesis starts with the "reality" and "void" in sculpture and their transformation, focuses on the "void" part, the negative space of sculpture, and discusses the significance of negative space and its forms in sculpture creation, as well as the significance of the mutual transformation between positive and negative space in sculpture through presenting the positive space transformed by the negative space in some of the author’s works. At the same time, the thesis will illustrates the value and significance of different new materials on rendering negative space. In Chapter One, the concept of negative space will be discussed, and the application of negative space in different art forms will be displayed. Chapter Two focuses on the delimitation of negative space specifically in sculpture, reviewing the origin and development of negative space in sculpture and how the concept is realized in the history of modern Western sculptures, and by analyzing examples of the transformation between positive space and negative space, illustrates the ever progressive and expanding exploration of negative space in sculpture, which is of vital importance to sculpture development. Chapter Three integrates the author’s graduation work, Forms of Negative Space, to display how the author understands the transformation between positive and negative space in his research, and the author’s experiments on material presentation of negative space. Chapter Four is the conclusion of the thesis.
