This thesis has the definition and the classification of Chinese and Englishapproving words on the base of collecting a lot of language materials. We try the bestto find out the differences and the similarities by contrasting the approving words ofthe two languages in semantic types and pragmatic expression to analyze why suchdifferences have come into being. We find that in Chinese and English freguently usedapproving words, some of them have correspondence relationship and the approvingwords are determined by the context. Sometimes, the approving words would betransferred or changed into disapproving words due to the context. In different speechacts, we find that Chinese tends to use approving words and disapproving words, whileEnglish tends to use neutral words. According to the contrastive analysis of Chineseand English approving words, we aim at making properly use and understanding ofapproving words and can give some help to the second language teaching, thedictionary compilation and the translation.
