The beautiful Guilin scenery enjoys "the No.1scenic spot under heaven" as one representative of many kinds of landscapes. It is well received for its unique looks. Although the landscapes with Guilin as their themes belong to a new subject, they have established their reputation in Chinese landscape paintings and have some a certain influence. This thesis is developed based on the100-year-old landscapes with Guilin as their themes, studying different groups of artists and comparing their different painting styles in their works with Guilin as their themes. It also involves different types of representative painters as well as their works style. They are divided into three groups: the traditional painters, such as Qi Bai-shi, Huang Bin-hong, whose paintings were based on traditional Chinese culture and painting styles, as they were influenced by traditional Chinese culture from their childhood. They started from the traditional Chinese painting, paying attention to using bush and ink technique. Most of their paintings were recreated according to their drafts or imagination but aren’t realistic painting style. the second group combined the eastern and western painting skills, such as Xu Ben-hong and Li Ke-ran. These painters mostly derived from the western way of observation and kept the Chinese tool materials and formal languages, thus combining the traditional Chinese painting techniques and western painting skills. They put the sketch as the base of the landscape painting creation, paying attention to the performance of colors, sunlight and shade. Their works often had obvious regional characteristics and personal style, which showed a combination of Chinese and western painting styles. The third group is painters with various painting styles, like Bai Xue-shi. These painters enriched and developed the representation skills and styles of landscapes by constantly putting things into practice and blazing new trails. They promoted the development of Guilin landscapes and the art cause of Guangxi. With the rapid development of the Guilin landscapes, more and more painters set out to study Guilin landscapes. However, a fully-fledged school of painting hasn’t formed up to now. It requires contemporary painters to think and work together as to how the advantages of the landscapes with the theme of Guilin are shown and how to form a style of their own.
