Xi’an, a city with long history, is one of the well-known four major ancient civilization capitals; covers the longest period for being capitals of which nearly are the most influential dynasties in Chinese history. It is one of the representative cities of Chinese civilization. The long history leaves behind the precious materials of place names. In terms of linguistics, this article emphasizes on the history, resource, current situation, culture and characteristics of the place names in Xi’an with the methods of horizontal study and vertical comparison.
