Tempera, is a permanent fast-drying painting medium consisting ofcolored pigment mixed with a water-soluble binder medium (usually aglutinous material such as egg yolk or some other size). Temperapainting has been found on early Egyptians sarcophagi decorations.Tempera painting was the primary panel painting medium for nearlyevery painter in the European Medieval and Early renaissance periodup. It reached its peak of popularity in the15th century, but fell into agradual decline with the development of oil painting and lately therewere intermittent revivals of tempera technique in Western art. In1899,the translation of The Craftsman’s Handbook by Ceninni brought theancient technique back to life and generated a revival of interest intempera painting which has continued since. Contemporary temperapainters have developed variations on Cenninis methods, but thetechnique remains essentially the same. As tempera took an importantpart in the origination and development of oil painting, the learning oftempera is essential for the comprehension of oil painting language. Inevery period of history, there were creating artists keeping watch on theinfinite charm of tempera painting. Through reviewing thecharacteristics development of painting material and technique of eggtempera, the paper studies the current status of tempera painting,explains the importance of learning tempera in history culturecircumstances combined with personal tempera practices.
