Liu Zhiping was an outstanding music educator and composer who promoted and laid afoundation for the modern music education of contemporary China. With his noble personalities,Liu educated numerous music talents through his education practices, which still worth reviewingand studying today. With full and accurate historical materials, this essay makes an in-depthanalysis of the most important phase of Liu’s life of education–Shanghai Collage of Fine Arts, todraw some theoretical inferences, and shed new lights on the now on going music educationalreform in China.With the guidance of historical materialism and dialectical materialism, using researchmethods of literature search, case study, generalization and summarization, this essay elaboratesthe main ideas in four parts. The first part introduces his experience of pursuing knowledge,teaching music, and initiating of educational thoughts, which laid foundation for his later teachingand thinking. The second part describes the how he founded the department of music, compiledthe textbooks, and trained teachers. The third part summarizes his achievements in cultivatingtalents. The fourth part draws a few educational ideas from Liu’s practices, like personalityshaping, spirit purifying, practice-first concept, multi-dimensional cultural cognition, and thepractical implications of these ideas. |
