The present paper tries to determine through comparative study of "Hanyu Jiaocheng" and "Minituku Chugokugo" what kind of teaching materials are best at helping Japanese people study the Chinese language. At the same time the paper will also propose some concrete methods of improvement."Hanyu Jiaocheng" is one of the most popular textbooks used for teaching Chinese as a foreign language while "Minituku Chugokugo" is one of Japan’s bestselling Chinese language textbooks. Because both sets of teaching materials are designed for two different types of learners and have different teaching requirements, their grammar teaching styles and characteristics also differ widely. Thus, the present paper, through comparative study of grammar items included in both sets of teaching materials, tries to investigate the reason behind these differences and propose a suitable method for teaching Chinese grammar to Japanese learners. The second chapter focuses mainly on analyzing the differences in quantity, choosing, number of dividing points and the arrangement of grammar points and tries to find out the reason why these differences exist between the two sets of teaching materials which are designed for beginner’s level. The third chapter mainly discusses the ways in which these differences either help or obstruct the Japanese learner in the study of the Chinese language. Our advice to the Chinese is that they use as reference the way in which "Minituku Chugokugo" handles some grammar items to be able to better understand and take into consideration the points that need special attention when compiling country-specific teaching materials; our advice to the Japanese is that they use as reference the way in which "Hanyu Jiaocheng" arranged some grammar items to be able to take into consideration methods that can improve the beginner’s level of Chinese language in Japan. The main content of the third chapter brings forward advice regarding grammar items which appeared before and regarding grammar items that have not been set up as grammar points, conceives a way by which one can adjust the means in which grammar points are explained and proposes the conceiving of software that can increase the number of language context exercises as well as founding a grammatical items database.
