In Korea, the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language has become increasinglyimportant. To cater for this shift, many private Chinese language institutes have beenestablished in recent years throughout Korea. The use of teaching materials published bythese private language institutes has become correspondingly common. Whilst these kinds oftextbooks are widely used by Korean learners, a portion of these teaching materials raiseseveral problematic grammatical areas for Korean language students. The comparative studyof Chinese language teaching materials published by such private Chinese language institutesand written by Korean authors with materials originating from Chinese Universities andwritten by Chinese authors is still relatively rare. The present paper aims to address this issue by examining two sets of textbooks from agrammatical perspective, one published from JRC Books titled,"Enjoy your Chinese" and theother from Beijing Language and Culture University Press titled,"Road to success".From both sets of teaching materials, grammatical areas are compared in terms ofquantity, inclusion of grammar points, segmentation of grammar points and the method ofgrammar explanation. These comparisons examine the similarities and differences as well asthe advantages and disadvantages of each teaching material. This paper also puts forwardconstructive suggestions to assist both Korean learners of Chinese as well as in the writing offuture Chinese textbooks by Koreans. From this positive effects on the Korea’s Chineseteaching materials can be achieved.
