English newspaper reading course, as a selective course of English major, isgaining greater attention in Chinese universities. According to statistics, currently more than80%of Chinese universities have launched English newspaper reading courses and there areat least forty-fifty kinds of teaching materials. However, most teachers still use thetraditional teaching mode that teachers present formal lectures and students take notes. Thiskind of teaching mode greatly suppresses students’ learning subjectivity and subjectconsciousness and affects the students’ comprehensive language using ability, cooperativelearning and social practice ability as well. There are a lot of researches on the importanceand significance of reading English newspapers, but the discussion about the teaching modeespecially the systematic and in-depth application research is limited. Therefore, the authorproposes that it is necessary to explore more new effective teaching methods of such coursesso as to improve the teaching quality and facilitate students’ development.Project-based Learning (PBL) is an instructional and students centered model, whichis used to integrate students’ language skills through a series of project activities. Manyexperts have done many researches on the characteristics and theoretical foundation andapplication of the PBL mode. All those studies indicate that PBL can develop student’slanguage skills, professional knowledge and improve learners’ comprehensive languageability, autonomous learning ability, cooperative learning and social practice ability. Theauthor tries to apply PBL into China’s current English newspaper reading course with thepurpose to explore a more effective method for English newspaper reading course. Based onPBL, the author designs one of the unit of college English newspaper reading courses. Later,the survey methods such as the teaching experiment and questionnaire are used to test theeffectiveness of the instructional design.
