XingShiYinYuanZhuan is an affectional novel that was written between JinPingMei and A Dream in Red Mansions, which is a transitional one in novel history. Written with fluent spoken language, this novel is natural in language and as vivid as real life. There are a number of kinship terms with characteristics of the times that reflect the contents of China’s patriarch system, social life and traditional conventions, which is worth researching. This paper collects all the kinship terms in the novel and makes analysis on the generalization of kinship terms used in the novel. The methodology is based on static research combined with dynamic research.On the basis of the previous studies, this paper makes researches on the kinship terms in the following four aspects:Firstly, the concept of kinship terms is defined and this paper makes a brief introduction to the significance of the study, current situation of the study and methodology used in this paper.Secondly, the kinship terms in XinShiYinYuanZhuan are divided into six categories: grandparental level, parental level, husband and wife, brother and sister, children and grandchildren. This paper makes specific analysis on each kinship term. All the kinship terms in the novel are listed and their frequency of occurrence is counted.Thirdly, synchronic and diachronic studies are made on the kinship terms in this novel. From the perspective of synchronic study, the various kinship terms can represent the overall situation of kinship terms in Qing Dynasty. From the perspective of diachronic study, the kinship terms in modern Chinese represented by the kinship terms in this novel are the transition in the kinship term development. There are two aspects in common.1. The terms of core relatives are stable.2. The basic kinship structure is stable. As for the trend of development, this paper concludes the following four aspects:1. bisyllablization of kinship terms;2. enrichment of kinship terms;3. subdivision of kinship terms;4. simplification of kinship terms.Lastly, this paper makes analysis on the generalization of kinship terms in the novel from the perspective of dynamic research. Through the analysis, the features of generalization are discussed.1. The generalization of kinship terms has the feature of selectivity.2. The generalized kinship terms are used in face to face communication.3. Terms of most female relatives result from marriage. Then, this paper discusses the reasons for the generalized kinship terms.1. It is affected by the traditional social structure based on families.2. It is also affected by the traditional principles of politeness.3. It is affected by traditional Chinese culture and affections.
