On october12,2006, the Turkish’s writer Ferit Orhan Pamuk has been awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature by Sweden Royal College, as in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city (he) has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures. Becoming one of the youngest winners since The Nobel Prize for Literature has been established.In his Award-winning fiction Istanbul:Memories of a City, there is a word can be used to summarize the author’s style, which called huzn. This paper digs the rich connotation of this word, found that the huzn is an unique concept of Turkish culture, which beyonds the individual, the emotional and the psychological aspects of the level, becoming the community-wide collective of the event.This paper attempts to analyze the root of huzn, which based on reading all the Chinese translations of Pamuk’s works, using the modern culture and the cultural complex as a fundamental standpoint, which in a multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, combined with the literature, philosophy, psychology, aesthetics, sociology, history and other disciplinary perspectives, to explore the humanistic values and modern impact of huzn.This paper includes three parts, there are foreword, text and conclusion.The foreword of the essay is mainly about the current status of research on Pamuk, indicating that why this paper select huzn as a research object, and proposed the specific research tasks and the innovation.The text includes four chapters:The chapter one focus on the background and literary origins of Pamuk’s creativity, and analysis the style of Pamuk’s novel. Expounding the religious meaning of huzn, and it’s gradual development in the society of Turks.The second chapter is a combination of historical reasons and the reality of the situation, try to discuss the objective and subjective reasons for the huzn, in order to fully grasp its character. And each chapter also has the resulting context analysis about the huzn, try to explore the reasons about Pamuk’s despondent writing.In chapter three, it mainly focuses on the multi-angle interpretation of huzn. Indicate that the potential crisis about the individual and national character as well as the cultural identity, which caused by the inevitable modernity, are probably the underlying causes, which leading to huzn. And this chapter also attempt to explore the aesthetic qualities of huzn.The chapter four based on the previous paper, try to investigate the value judgments about huzn in the context of globalization, we believe that huzn as one kind of national sentiments, mainly emerging the resistance about the weak culture encounter the strong cultural, which in the background of globalization. This chapter also attempts to indicate that the collective memory which involve the huzn, possibly play a significant role in the reconstruction of national identity and the identity of the groups.In conclusion part it pointed out that huzn, in essence, is a social and cultural phenomenon, the study of huzn should be extended to a vast field of culture. As a starting point for theoretical studies, huzn reflects the transformation of the shortcomings of modem Turkey, so that we can be settled through this complex, to investigate the integrity of the social thoughts and the historical development of identity.The purpose of this paper which focus on Pamuk’s huzn, is to grasp the origin of this emotion. Considering by means of cultural roots, the historical background, the social environment and the personality of Pamuk, as well as the identity confusion, in order to investigate the reality of the transition process in modern culture, simultaneously to explore the interaction between literature and culture, the intention is to seek the new symbol among the culture clash and fusion.
