There exist differences between the sound characteristics of intonations and how people perceived the intonations. This is especially obvious in the situation where someone is learning a second language. The cognition of intonations in second languages relies on one’s mother tongue, which can result in the insensitivity or over-sensitivity in listening. With the objective of establishing an effective method of learning Chinese phonetic Category for Japanese in mind, this study will conduct the following researches:1) A survey on the Chinese Intonation Cognition of Japanese;2) Survey into the listening difficulty of Japanese in identifying similar syllables in Chinese language;3) Survey into the interferences of Japanese Roman Characters in Japanese (people) learning Chinese Pinyin. These surveys are important to this research, and are also its innovations. According to "The Speech Learning Model", in order to establish phonetic category for a second language, one needs to understand the distinctions between the vocal similarities between the mother tongue and the second language. The key objective of this thesis is to provide specific data for the establishing of Chinese Phonetics Category for Japanese.
