Complements have taken an important role in Chinese grammar. As the most frequently used complements, Complements of direction is one of the difficulties in both learning and teaching, especially the extensional uses which are abstract and relatively large in number.The thesis summarizes the current academic achievements of compound directional complements in modern Chinese research and in the field of Chinese teaching for foreigners. Then, based on the second language acquisition theory:error analysis, inter-language acquisition, performance analysis.This thesis adopts the complementary method of written natural corpus analysis and testing unnatural corpus analysis.All the participants of the questionnaires come from intermediate and advanced level foreign students from International Cultural Exchange School of Fudan University. This paper aims to investigate the acquisition process of extensional uses of compound directional complements.According to the limited number of data, we find that correct rate of "CHULA12""GUOLAI3" rank the first while "CHULAI3"and "XIAQU" are the lowest. At the same time, the differences of the result of tests are evident at different levels but not evident in the mother tongue background.Besides, we also use the results of the analysis of acquisition to judge the arrangement in the syllabuses and put forward some useful teaching advices concerning the extensional uses of compound directional complements.
