Based on a corpus-linguistic investigation of the Chinese language and the syntacticand semantic theory and modern pragmatic theory, the paper presents multi-perspectivestudy on modern Chinese tautology, the structure “N+Fm+shi+N”. We make a detaileddescription of its syntactic, semantic and pragmatic functions.Chapter one talks about earlier researches on tautology and the aspects that needfurther inquiry, and circumscribes the subject matter of our research. Then it tells theresearch perspectives and theoretical basis, research methods and corpus source of thispaper. We choose N+Fm+shi+N as our target, because the modal adverbs often indicate theattitude of the speaker, while this structure is commonly used to express the attitude of thespeaker. So we combine these two in our research.Chapter two starts from the modal adverbs and nouns which can be accepted by thisstructure,we have a deep research of their semantic characteristics and classification. Thepaper divides the acceptable modal adverbs into strongest certainty tone adverbs, strongcertainty tone adverbs and weak certainty tone adverbs; divides the acceptable nouns intocommendatory term, neutral term and derogatory term. In the structure “N+Fm+shi+N”,the neutral nouns slanted to commendatory or derogatory ones. This is the result of puttingspecial structure into special evaluative context. The third chapter focuses on the semantic analysis of the “N+Fm+shi+N” structure. We find that the acceptable modal adverbs of this structure share one commoncharacteristic, which is to express a “certainty” tone of a speaker on the content of speech. In the paper we try to create an “N+Fm+shi+N” tone system,to test the strength of the toneaccording to their semantic features and discourse functions. The fourth chapter analyzes the pragmatic functions of the “N+Fm+shi+N” structure, including its contextual conditions and its dependence on the context. In the perspective ofanti-expection information and exceeded-expection information, we divide the“N+Fm+shi+N” structure into the anti-expection information mark. The last chapter gives a summary of the previous four chapters and points out thevalues, shortcomings and future research plan of this study.
