Special series of portrait photography, having stronger narrative ability in comparison to ordinary portraits photography, is widely applied in all kinds of photographic practice. To date, most studies of such images, involved mainly around individual photographers, cannot provide the general description of such.The author writes this paper on the special series of portrait photography in order to summarize the characteristics of such photography into the presentation of such concept so as to provide the photographers or scholars in the theoretical studies of this field with certain kind of help. The studies made in this paper are combined with photographic practice concerned.Through the studies of existing literature and visual analysis, the characteristics of special series of portrait photography have been explained and analyzed in a relatively comprehensive manner. The author has produced the special series of portrait photography "The Chinese80s’Living in Beijing" to prove the correctness of this study.Based on the studies and practice, the author has come to the conclusion on the characteristics of special series of portrait photography as an important category of images:first, such photography shows the abilities of humane concerns, providing a mirror of thinking and self-examination with the visual language by the color of humanism, which provides the human societies with a point of their own focus.Secondly, such images show great narrative abilities on a special topic, presenting the opinions of the photographers on their special concerns through the comprehensive description, accumulation and enlargement of the their images, which is recording the colorful way of evolutions of the targets in front of their cameras, strengthening the narrative reactions of relative characters by applying the photographic languages and styles as well as the photographic montage.Thirdly, the special series of portrait photography engages the attentions of the photographers into the pursuing on the typology of human beings and humanism as well as the presentation and description of them. In such a process, the producers make a unique presentation of documental photography with an open-minded, diversified, and multileveled narrative images based on the command of the producers on the artistic languages, the dynamic balance of the narrative nature of the images from both subjective and objective point of view.
