The Bible Precedent Of Pragmatic Research

There’s an interesting trend in modern communication, i.e. an author connects his own work with ready-made examples by using existing implicit subjective comments. A significant performance of this trend is flexible use of precedent phenomenons.Precedent and its derivatives are widely used in modern linguistics and literature. This word originates from the report 《The role of precedent phenomenons in structure and functions of linguistic identity》 in sixth World Teachers Conference of Russian language and literature. Later scholars in Russian pay more and more attention to precedent issue, which includes the research on the precedent text (Yu. A. Sorokin, I. M. Mikhaleva), precedent discourse (V. G. Kostomarov, N. D. Burvikova, I.V. Zakharenko), precedent name (D. B. Gudkov, I. V. Zakharenko, V. V. Krasnykh) and precedent situation (D. B. Gudkov, V. V. Krasnykh). In recent years, sholars like V. V. Krasnykh, from the perspective of recognitive linguistics, believe that the narrow definition of precedent text should be extended and then they come out with the expression of precedent phenomenon. Precedent phenomenons are classified in four types:precedent situation, precedent text, precedent name and precedent discourse. It’s precedent names that this thesis centers on.Studying precedent phenomenons has become an important learning in Russia and many Chinese scholars begin to look into this issue. But precedent phenomenon, especially precedent name, is still a new topic and only studied by a small number of linguistics in China. Precedent phenomenons came into being in the religion of ancient Greek and Rome. The Bible as a classic in religion culture, contains a lot of precedent phenomenons which appear in various areas of people’s life. The study of precedent phenomenons in The Bible can help us understand Russian culture better. In terms of its origin, Yu. N. Karaulov mentioned that precedent phenomenons came from literature works as well as ancient stories, fairy tales, The Bible, folktale, political articles and etc. With lots of case study, Chinese scholars (Liu Hong, Xu Qi and Su Ya) took an interest in its origin. They argued that precedent phenomenons come from ancient myth and The Bible. Therefore, it can be concluded that, religion is the major source of precedent names.The thesis body consists of three chapters.The first chapter deals with the theories used in precedent names study in The Bible which is the basis of later linguistic analysis. This chapter has three parts:1) precedent phenomenons;2) precedent names;3) precedent names’ status in precedent phenomenons. The first part gives a definition of precedent phenomenons, its function and classifications; the second part introduces precedent names, its origin, structure, existing ways and functions; the third part compares precedent name, precedent text, precedent situation and precedent discourse and demonstrates the importance of precedent names.The second chapter analyzes the precedent names in The Bible as well as its classifications of functions. The Bible has been the 《desk book》 of Russia. Since Christian became Russia’s state religion, Christian and The Bible became an essential part of Russian Culture. Definitely, Christian and The Bible are in Russian’s politics and social life, and even in their national psychology. The proper nouns and precedent names in The Bible include:1) people’s names;2) names of places;3) animal names. This thesis points out that precedent names in The Bible have three functions, namely moral influence, symbolic meaning and warning function. The third chapter examines the application of precedent names in modern Russian from the perspective of culture, pragmatics and literature, which involves the analysis of precedent names from The Bible in idioms, social media and literature works. The first part analyses some examples, the second generalizes usages of precedent names, which includes three points:1) prototype usage, i.e., people know their original forms and they are directly accepted, understood and responded by the readers;2) modified usage, i.e., their original forms are changed to contract similar forms;3) signal usage, i.e., precedent names and their meaning symbols function as a whole and are understood by people.The last chapter draws a conclusion of the study.
