As one of the famous novels in the Qing Dynasty, LvYuanCongHua is well known for itsrich content, full and accurate data and smooth writing style. The novels reveals the dark sidesof bureaucrats circle, the shortcomings of the imperial exam system, customs and anecdotes,and presents a vivid social panorama of the middle period or age of the Qing Dynasty. Forthat reason it has a high ideological value as well as artistic and aesthetic value. This artworkhas attracted a widespread attention, due to its achievements in Beitie (the rubbing from astone inscription), calligraphy, valuable metal and stones, while it draws a comparatively lessattention in the literary aspect. There is still large room for further research. This paperattempts to make a comprehensive and in-depth research on LvYuanCongHua with a view tofurther deepen the understanding of LvYuanCongHua.There are6parts in this paper.The first part takes an overview of the researches of this artwork as well as thesignificance of its research, emphasizing the evaluation of this artwork from the perspectivesof its historical importance and research treatises, as well as the academic results from thepast treatises on this artwork.The second part explores QianYong’s family background and his life. First, in this part,through the research of the Qian family which is known as the first well-respected family inthe region of LiangZhe and The Instructions of Qian this paper tries to explore QianYong’s family background. Second, this paper tries to discuss the influence of QianYong’s lifeexperiences on his fictional works from the following phases of his life: the studying phase,the aides phase, and the recluse phase.The third part analyzes the social and cultural background at that time and the motivationof its writing. First, this paper tries to study the social and the cultural background ofQianYong’s times in this part. Secondly, the intrinsic motivation of its writing will beanalyzed from two aspects: to reward the right and punish the wrong, for self-entertaining.The fourth part classifies the stories in this artwork into different genres and makesdetailed analysis on each genre. This paper classifies the stories into3different genres by thedifferences of contents and subjects. First, the novels about building personage’s images canbe analyzed from the following angles: anecdotes, short lines, witty shorts. Second, theresearch of the novels of recording fantastic stories can be divided into the following parts:spirits and ghosts, cause and consequence, anecdotes and bizarre affairs, prophet dreams andstrange. Since the legendary stories are rather scarce, there will be a brief introductionfollowing the novels of recording fantastic stories instead of forming an independent part.The fifth part describes the artistic and aesthetic value of this artwork in3aspects. First,there are different aspects in its description of features, methods like the plain description ofappearance and conducts, the emphasis of typical events and the employment of contrast andcomparing. Second, there are lots of twists and turns in the plot settings mingled with fakestories and true facts. Third, the language is elegant but popular enough to elaborate. Through the analysis of the above three aspects, this part looks forward to getting a morecomprehensive and accurate reflection of its artistic and aesthetic value.The sixth part summarizes this paper, analyzes the reason why it draws insufficientattention, and previews the prospects of future researches.
