"who Knows" Discourse Analysis

"谁知道",an adversative conjunction,referring to "unexpectedly",is one of thefrequently used word in modern Chinese.By the analysis of a large number ofexample sentences,we found that "谁知道"can not only reflect opposing relation,butalso have mang other meanings and express unexpected feelings.Previous studies on "谁知道"focus on it’s nature and function.Mang scholarsmake it a phrase.And many people like to study it with the functions and differencesof it’s four meanings and it’s developments and changes.There are few studies aboutthe adversative conjunction"谁知道",which give us a large research space.Using the theories of three planes and so on,and in the background of textlinguistics,this paper planes to analyze the grammatical features of"谁知道"innature,form,semantics and pragmatics.This paper is divided into five parts:In the introduction of this paper,we first introduce the purpose and significanceof the topic of this paper,and then we introduce the research status.At last,weintroduce the methods and corpus source.In the first part,we discuss the nature of"谁知道".First we summarize theprevious views,and analyze the differences of their views.Through the wholeanalysis,we draw a conclusion that "谁知道"is an adversative conjunction.In the second part,we discuss the form of"谁知道".We introduce this part withtwo aspects.One is linguistic units which it connects,and one is it’s convergence.It canconnect many linguistic units,like clause,sentence and paragraph.It can be used alonein a sentence or a text to reflect the logical basis of the text or show the feelings ofsurprise only.It can also be used with other words,such as "可","竟","居然"and so on.In the third part,we discuss the semantic patterns of"谁知道"in the text.Wediscuss four different semantic patterns. And then we analyze the semantic featuresand emotional feelings. In the fourth part,we discuss the pragmatic functions of"谁知道"in the text.Thereare four pragmatic functions.It can point the reset,highlight the focus,change orcontinue the topic and so on.The pragmatic functions of"谁知道"is based on it’sbasic semantics.Because of the semantic opposition between the before and afteritems,we can make the judgment in it’s content and the subjective feelings and knowthe core of the text and then unify the theme.
