The "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern is an extremely important kind of words unit in both ancient and modern Chinese, it is also used a lot in both spoken language and written word. The writer referred to adequate articles and concerning papers from domestic linguistic journals and found that there was little research on the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern, only very few researchers have made several general analyses on it. However, articles about the "Mei-X Mei-Y" pattern were far more than that about the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern. In this thesis, the writer mainly borrows ideas from previous study of others on the "Mei-X Mei-Y" pattern and makes detailed analysis of the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern so as to achieve a better understanding of this pattern. Meanwhile, it should also be helpful in in the progress of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The main parts of this thesis include the following six chapters:The first part:In the introduction the writer roughly introduces the object of the study, points out the sources of the corpus used in the thesis, defines the research scope and simply describes the methodology when studying the pattern. Besides, the writer also puts forward three research questions and lists the rude frame construction of the thesis.The second part:The second chapter is the literature review. Because there are few theses concerning the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern, the writer consults much literature on the "Mei-X Mei-Y" pattern for reference.The third part:In this part the writer analyzes the structural features and the syntactic functions of the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern. The "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern usually can be used as a predicate, attributive, adverbial adjunct and complement in a sentence, but sometimes it can also serve as a subject and object.The fourth part:In the fourth chapter, the writer investigates the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern from the aspect of semantics. Seen from the internal semantic relationship, "X" and "Y" which can enter into the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern are closely related; seen from the external semantic relationship, when "X" and "Y" are different, the meaning of the phrase will be very different. The semantic types of the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern can be divided into two main groups:affirmation and negation, the negative meanings can be further divided into five cases.The fifth part:In this part, the writer analyzes the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern when it is used as focal information and background information mainly from the respective of the Information Pragmatics and gives a brief sketch of the expressing features of the "Wu-X Wu-Y" pattern.The sixth part:The last part makes a conclusion of the paper. In this chapter, the writer explains the purpose and significance of the study and generalizes the limitations and advantages together with some suggestions.
