Zhou SiCong is an outstanding woman painter in the20th century Chinese art history. Sheis committed to surmounting the shallow image elaboration of objective representation bymeans of art, to have the reflection and criticism of reality, while focusing on ferreting out theemotional factor in reality, emphasizing the injection of personal feelings. Her artistic works,based on the emotional expression of art, show her new exploration in different historicalperiods. Her works always imply the deep and sincere compassion, which is particularlyreflected in her artistic creation after the Cultural Revolution. Her works during this period,whether for the thinking of the fate of the nation, or the performance of individual survivalencounters, integrate her feelings of life’s nature and highlight the heartfelt pathos, which arealso the creative peak of her artistic career. The creation during this period represents her styleand has far-reaching impact as well as very high academic research value.This thesis, on the basis of the results of previous studies, mainly deals with ZhouSiCong’s inkwash art after the Cultural Revolution. This thesis concerns the usage of formallanguage, and combines the relevant history to have comprehensive analysis and summary fromthe practical artistic point of view. The first chapter analyzes the factors in Zhou SiCong’sinkwash paintings respectively from the following aspects, internal causes of the initiation ofher sadness and external factors triggering her sadness,and the establishment of her artroad.The second chapter concerns the performance of self-journey inkwash painting themefrom three different angles:sadness about the national crisis, and people’s livelihood,sadness ofthe female experience, the sadness of the natural scenery.The third chapter analyzes the formallanguage of inkwash paintings. The profound realization of the sadness in life contributes to thepositive construction of self image in Zhou SiCong’s inkwash art. This chapter discusses indetail the characteristics of the formal language in Zhou SiCong’s inkwash works by specificanalysis of the style,inkwash,color, composition and other elements.The fourth chapterdiscusses the academic value of Zhou Sicong’s inkwash art and the revelation of contemporaryChinese paintings.
