As the outstanding representatives of the ecological Marxism, O’Connor and Foster on the theory of the ecological Marxism has general character, but from the relationship with Marx and the critique of capitalism or the solutions of the crisis they have theirs own distinctive personality characteristics. In the relation with Marx, O’Connor denied that Marx had ecological thought, advocated that ecology should be injected into Marx’s theoretical foundation to establish new historical materialism of nature, labor and culture.;However,Foster thought Marx’s view of the world was the systematic ecology, then used material conversion to explain Marx’s ecology. In the critique of capitalism, O’Connor reinterpreted the concept of production conditions, put forward the second contradiction theory of capitalism and emphasized the contact of capitalist external conditions and ecological crisis; From the material change between man and nature, Foster thought the material transformation crack producing from capitalist conditions can cause the ecological crisis. In the solutions of the ecological crisis, O’Connor considered that eco-socialism will be achieved through the combination of the labor movement and the new social movements, but he stressed the role of the new social movements; Foster advocated solving the ecological crisis by the political, cultural and strategic ecological revolutions, and then towards to sustainable development and communism. From the classic texts of Marx’s,comparing their ideas systematically not only is the exploration on a new form of Marxist theory, but also has positive significances about solving today’s eco-environmental problems and building a harmonious socialist society.
