The history of legal interpretation can be traced back to law itself. Legal interpretation, standing the long-time test, has proved its importance diachronically and synchronically. Onone hand, it reflects the legal practice; on the other hand, it pursues the truth in law. Legalinterpretation has yielded several rules, in which Comprehension Rule and Plain MeaningRule are selected in this thesis to demonstrate the connection of legal interpretation andlegal translation, consequently to illustrate the illumination given by legal interpretationrules.Legal translation is such a process that translators digest and re-construct the targetlegal texts. Like legal interpretation, legal translation highlights the comprehension of thetarget legal texts. No matter how diligent the translators are, the achievement of a state ofextreme equivalence is no more than an impossible mission. Eugene A. Nida’s theory ofequivalence translation is no doubt a great guide in legal translation as in other translationfield. However, to strive for the original meaning of law, usually ends up with the closestexpressions to target texts on the soil of reasonableness-seeking.As great similarities exist between legal interpretation and legal translation, the authorof this thesis, on the basis of a brief overview of legal interpretation and legal translation, makes a comparison of the two, then expounds the Plain Meaning Rule and Comprehensionrule in detail. By analyzing the predicament of legal translation and dissecting legaltranslation examples, this thesis is devoted to broadening the insight of legal translationtheory research, which obviously distinguishes from general translation methods, andsuggests some translation strategies of doing legal translation are suggested to indicate themost significant contribution of the writer.
