The concept of Ethic/Sittlichkeit in Hegel’s philosophy of law will be interpreted in this assay. In his special context, Hegel defines Ethic in his own way. Firstly, Hegel takes the "group" approach, and combines institution and justice in one system, upon the presupposition of "cultural determinism"; secondly, he sets "Self-determination" in "Abstract Right" and "Self-discipline" in "Morality" as premises of "Ethic", therefore brings spirit of the Enlightenment into ethic institutions; thirdly, Hegel describes how the family, civil society and state functions to discipline individual’s wild will, cultivate individual’s sociality and lead them to freedom.By analyzing, we can claim that Hegel define the concept of "Ethic" in a moderate approach. Comparing with Karl·Marx who dooms the family, civil society and state to be death in a radical and Left way, and Karl·Schmidt who recognize the legitimacy of any existing social institutions unconditionally in a fundamentalism and Right way, Hegel seeks prudently the elements of freedom in family, civil society and state.
