Nowadays, English is the international language in the world, so it has strategic significanceof learning English in later life and work. At the background of economic globalization andsociety information, knowledge is playing a more and more important part in all fields, so studentshave to prepare for joining the competitive society. Cooperation and communication play a veryimportant role in one’s outlook on life and work in this new age. The cooperative and creativespirits have become the era spirits in the21stcentury. So education has to fulfill the global task tocultivate students’ cooperative quality. Therefore cooperative learning is in place of the traditionalEnglish teaching. Cooperative learning was started in the United States in1970s and it is a form ofcollaboration, is working together to accomplish shared goals.In this thesis, the author probes into the application of cooperative learning in senior highschool English classroom. The author choose two parallel classes for the experiment. Before theexperiment, the two classes will have a pre-test, then the traditional method is used in the ControlClass while cooperative learning is employed in the Experimental Class, after the16weeks’experiment, they will have post test. The result of16weeks’ practice show that cooperativelearning helps to increase opportunities for students to use the language, stimulate students’motivation in learning English and promote students’ academic achievement.This thesis consists of five chapters in all. Chapter one is an introductory part which proposesthe research background, some important issues and the importance and necessity of the researchin the thesis. Chapter two is the literature review of the thesis. Chapter three is about theapplication of cooperative learning in senior high school English classroom. Chapter four is theanalysis and evaluation of the experimental results. Chapter five is a concluding part.
