Cooperative learning is a new teaching approach originated in the USA in1960s.Because of its good effects in improving the class environment and efficiency, as wellas in motivating students to study, it has been well accepted by the scholars bothhome and abroad. In the cooperative learning approach, students work in groups andhelp each other and during the process in which this kind of approach is applied,independence, individual responsibility and team spirit of the students are welldeveloped. And at last, not only the individual but also the whole team makesprogress in learning. Moreover, the approach requires more of the teachers, who aresupposed to have better teaching skills and stronger abilities in team management.The application of the cooperative learning is elaborated theoretically andpractically. In this thesis, the author tries to apply the cooperative learning theory tothe teaching of English writing in senior one in high school, hoping to verify theeffectiveness of cooperative learning Firstly, the author deals with the relevanttheories about cooperative learning. Then the author moves on to the analysis of thepresent problems existing in teaching of English writing in the senior one in highschool. Based on the cooperative learning theory, the author carried out a study oncooperative learning in English writing in two parallel classes in senior one through acomparative teaching lasting a period of five months. The whole study is divided intofour parts—the design, the preparation, the implementation and the analysis of theoutcome. At last, the conclusion is drawn that the cooperative learning approach isfound to be able to replace the traditional teaching methods in the English writingclasses due to all its advantages.
