Values is a major form of social ideology and embodies people’s thoughts andexpectations of their own way of life, purpose and significance in real life. It has intrinsicrelative stability, but at the same time varies with changes in social life such as educationalknowledge, life experience and working environment etc. College students’values educationis the core content of ideological and political work in colleges and universities, it is both anacademic issue theoretically and a significant topic of teaching practice in colleges anduniversities. In maritime colleges and universities which are parts of higher education, moreattention is paid to students’professional skills and psychological education becausegraduates will be engaged in international shipping industry which possesses uniqueinternationalism, military property and harsh working conditions etc., however inadequateemphasis is put on students’ philosophy of life, world outlooks and values. To strengthenvalues education of students in maritime colleges and universities is the main objective of thethesis. Based on the comprehensive analyses of existing achievements, taken methods insocial sciences such as ideological and political pedagogy, sociology and psychology, etc. asresearch methods, multiple implementation paths of values education in maritime collegesand universities were deeply carried out. The author hopes to make more administrators inmaritime colleges and universities to attach more importance to values education, andeffectively strengthen ideological and political education in maritime colleges anduniversities. The thesis is divided into four parts.From the basic connotation of values education and by questionnaires, analysis of thecurrent problems in maritime college students’values was made in part one. The problemsare mainly shown as prominent individual values that is composed of“self-realization,self-responsibility”, conflicts of value choice, values dislocation and values approvalimbalance etc. The important significance of strengthening maritime college students’valueseducation is proposed as follows: First, helps to realize the basic objectives of personnel training in the higher maritime education; Second, helps to cultivate high-qualitypersonnel needed in the shipping companies; Three, helps to realize the historic mission ofmaritime college students.In the second part, concrete analysis of the present conditions and causes of valueseducation in maritime colleges and universities was made. The content, method and quality ofeducation main body in values education of maritime college students need to be improved;Values education space was crowded out by teaching and practical tasks in maritime collegesand universities; To a certain extent, semi-military management restricts the self-cultivationof values education; Non-effective integration of professional education, practice teachingwith values education undermines the universality and long-lasting effect of values education.The similarities and differences regarding values education between maritime collegestudents and other regular institutions of higher education were compared and analyzed in thethird part. Thus values education among maritime college students should hold up the bannerof socialist core values, highlight ideals and beliefs education, patriotic education, vocationalvalues education, professional ethics, quality education, as well as professional healtheducation.Part four is the key and core of the full-text. Based on the analysis of the reality,combined with the unique management of maritime colleges and universities, values educationstrategies were put forward. To strengthen values education of maritime college students, efforts should bemade from the following aspects: First, the vector of values education should highlight the innovation;Second, the values education methods should be scientific; Third, values education environment should begreatly optimized; Fourth, the subjects of values education should focus on quality; Fifth, values educationshould attach great importance to the development of students’self-education.
