Orienteering was not introduced into China until1983, and that leavesshorter time for it to be combined within physical education curriculum.This has led to many problems such as great difference between teachingcontents among schools, uneven teachers, non-standardized teachingmaterials, and lack of sites and equipment, etc. Currently few researcheshave been done on the subject of orienteering within high school, andthere exist no research on orienteering in Jiangmen. In this paper weinvested the current situation of Orienteering Courses (OC) withinJiangmen City by survey, analyzed the problems and contradictions of thedevelopment of OC. Study the rules and content in a comprehensive,multiple viewed, deepened perspective, trying to complete the currentsituation. Thus we can narrow the gap between OC and other courseswithin PE lessons, provide theoretical direction for OC. With reasonableproposal we could make sure OC’s fast development in Jiangmen,increase the level of it and guarantee a sustainable, healthy and orderlydevelopment.Research methods used in this dissertation are literature research,questionnaire, expert interviews, statistics and logical analysis. Combingteaching theory and special characteristics in orienteering, the authorstratified sampling the subject in Jiangmen Waihai Middle School, No.1.High School of Jiangmen, Peiying Senior High in Jiangmen, No.2. HighSchool of Jiangmen, No.1. Vocational School of Jiangmen, Yifu SeniorHigh, and Xinhui OCBC Senior and up to300students among thoseschools. And conclude the current situation by survery on students,teachers and interviews on educational experts, our results are as follows:OC in Jiangmen has a low curriculum rate with large regional differences; Objects and complete curriculum of orientation are incomplete inJiangmen; Although PE teachers are reasonable overall, but they lake ofspecification and has rare opportunities in future developments; teachingmaterial was chosen by teachers and maps were more home-made thanstandardized; Content of OC covers such a huge range that lower thecombination of theory and practice; Not enough equipment and lake ofOC sites leads to a low satisfaction among teachers and students; Despiteof all negative aspect, students are high in their interest, attitude andmotivation; The most important aspect that could affect OC developmentin Jiangmen are the Government’s’ attention, Funds, Teachers, Advocacyand Students’ motivation.With the current situation mentioned above we put ourcountermeasure in the following ways: Attract government’s attention;Pay attention to teachers’ development; More Professional Development;More proper advocacy for a lifelong PE attitude in students; Strengthenthe construct of equipment and OC fields; Attempt on orienteering club;and last but not least to organize events and competitions for interactionbetween schools.
