How to offer our learners the scope for’learning how to mean’? How can we use the target language to make real meanings in the language rather than to talk about the language? Drama offers the context in which to do this.Early in the17th century, drama has been used as a tool in school curricula in UK. In modern times, throughout the general education system dramatic techniques are carried out from the elementary school, to secondary school, to college, even to the postgraduate stage, which forms a systematic, go-forward and pyramid drama in education system. Not only do students acquire the subject knowledge, but also they obtain comprehensive qualities. Centuries of instruction experience is obvious to all which makes drama an important position in general education of UK.Although there was no specified concept of drama in education in mainland China academia, several Chinese educators had a bold attempt on dramatic techniques and subject teaching in combination since the last century. Unfortunately, the attempt did not get a comprehensive promotion. As the development of the globalization, cultural exchange between China and western has been increasing, including the academic communication. Integrating external instruction experience with internal conditions, the exploration of drama in education in basic education of China will be a profound meaning in cultivating talents.Educationally speaking, the author firstly sorts out masters’theories both at home and abroad. Besides the historical development of drama in education in UK, the author introduces relevant information of drama in education as well, such as its teaching characteristics, its special requirements, etc. And then, the author analyses the observations of English classes in Dundonald High School so as to summarise advantages achieved by drama in education. Finally, it hopes that the instruction experience of UK will make a reflection and perfect sense towards the present situation of the development of drama in education in mainland China.
