Institutional research evolved from America and prevailed there. Because of its ability to solveof the problems existing in the college management and development, it has greatly promoted thedevelopment of the American higher education.With The coming of the institutional reform and the strategy formulation of the advancededucation, Chinese institutions of higher learning must improve the work level in all aspects as soonas possible, and change tradition management model, establish new mode of the management andwork, and finally establish higher education management system which is wholly suited toconditions in China. These changes make the institutional research beginning to be in the air inChina. Since the institutional research coming into our country in 1980s, it have developed rapidlyand made great achievements during these thirty years. However, it has not helped much in turningthe situation around, such as low internal Management and disqualification of administrators,because our institutional research is not mature , especially in the specialized process.Based on the current development situation of our institutional research, with its specializationas the focus, on the basis of the Literature Analysis, this research uses comprehensive utilization ofquestionnaire and interview survey to analyze it deeply. At the mean time, the research referencessome successful experience on the developmental mechanism from the similar colleges oruniversities in the America and Huazhong University of Science & Technology, and then proposessome strategy suggestion for the development of the specialization of the institutional research. Thefollowing five parts are the main contents of the research:The first part is an introduction. This section includes: background, research purpose, researchcontent, literature review, research significance, and research perspective as well as researchmethod. The general review of this study consists of the Implication of institutional research,Implication of specialization, Implication of institutional research specialization, and DevelopmentTendency of the institutional research, the problems and reform of the institutional research, and theresearch method of others.The second part gives an introduction to the theory, including the following parts: Implicationof institutional research, Implication of specialization, Implication of institutional researchspecialization.The third part is about the contemporary situations and problem analysis of institutionalresearch. Research methods, such as the questionnaire and the interview survey, have been adoptedto invest and analyze the disadvantages in the current of institutional research. The fourth part is about the review of experience and enlightenment. In this part, the advancedexperience of America, Huazhong University of Science and Technology have been introduced.The fifth part is about the Perfecting Countermeasures of the professional development ofInstitutional Research in china. In this part, the research references some reasonable factors on thedevelopmental mechanism from America, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Andthen proposes some strategy suggestion.
