A Research On Family Cultural Capital

Recent years, the domestic and foreign scholars have done some study on the family cultural capital. In the thesis, based on Bourdieu’s theory of family cultural capital and introducing the conception of Family Field, family cultural capital falls into three categories. The study gets some statistic information by questionnaire-based survey to students of two middle schools in Wuhan, and gets some qualitative information by family interviews to sampled students, and then gets the conclusion.The thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is introduction. This part introduces the background and reasons of the study, the research aims and the research methods, reviews the domestic and foreign research on the cultural capital and family cultural capital, and defines a few main concepts. The second part to the forth part is the main body of the thesis. The second part is about the classification of family cultural capital, which is divided into embodied cultural capital, objectified cultural capital and institutionalized cultural capital, or is divided into in-family cultural capital and out-of-family cultural capital according to working place. In-family cultural capital includes linguistic habit, reading habit, parenting style, intercommunication between parent and child, learning habit, cultural commodities in the family, parents’education background, parents’expectation to children’s educational level, and so on. Out-of-family cultural capital includes the intercommunication between parents and teachers, extracurricular activities, cultural activities, cultural traveling, culture resources belonged to the home place, and the education background of relatives and friends. Based on the analysis in the part two, I designed the questionnaire and did questionnaire in two middle schools in Wuhan. Part three introduces the questionnaire survey, analyses the data, and emphatically analyses the differences between the two middle schools’ family cultural capital. Part four analyses the qualitative differences about six aspects, such as parent-child communication, the attitude to surfing the Internet, and the communication to the school, and gets four conclusion about family cultural capital: Firstly, this is the interaction graph of cultural capital; Secondly embodied cultural capital and institutionalized cultural capital can lead to the family character. Thirdly, family cultural capital is changing all the time. Fourthly family cultural capital must be contacted with the family society capital. Finally, the inheritance of family cultural capital exits some risk.
