It is quiet important to master the vocabulary for learning English well. It not only hasconnotative culture, but also plays the role of forming the language. It penetrates through thewhole process of learning English. The vocabulary is the foundation stone of both languageand language skills that maintains phonetics, grammar and context. The vocabulary is moreimportant than grammar in the function of intercommunicating. It can’t be missed in phrasesand sentences. So the learning of vocabulary is crucial to the success of learning a kind oflanguage.The vocabulary is the basic of learning English, but it is quite difficult for a lot ofstudents to learn iwords well. Almostly, all the learners agree that for lerning words, thequantity is quite large and the process is very complicated during the study. So, it isimpossible for them to learn words well just by remembering directly. Because of the twosituations, learning strategies of words plays an important role in the whole process. And itbecome more important as the learners move to a higher grade and the knowledge of Englishbecome deeper and harder. At home and abroad, a number of linguistics professors andEnglish teachers have made researches from the aspects of theory and practice. And they bothproved the function of strategies playing in the study of vocabularies can’t be neglected. Iflearners could use the strategies more and better, they will feei esay in learning vocabulariesand learn quickly.This research is focused on the depth and width of learning strategies about vocabulary,analyzing the causes and summarizing the characters. After the survey of538Grade-9students, I get four results:1. the students use the strategies in a low frequency;2. Thestudents only use several strategies—cognitive strategies and memory strategies.3. Thestudents like using the strategies that are mechanical.4. There are differences between goodlanguage learners and poor language learners. And the former does better than the latter inusing learning strategies.
