Accompanied by social and economic development and people’s needs,school performanceproblems have become an important research topic in contemporary international educationsector. More and more countries and scholars recognize the importance of school effectivenessresearch. If schools are not effective,education reform is difficult to further deepen,let alone tocultivate an innovative spirit,practical ability and all-round development of students. Westerncountries have made some achievements in research methods and practice in the20th century. Ithas proved that the results of these studies has improved the educational performance of theWestern countries. The other hand,the school effectiveness research in China has started late inthe theory and practice and is still at the exploratory stage,especially the combination of schooleffectiveness and school management practice needs further strengthen.This research will discuss the western school effectiveness about half of the20th centuryand try to find the characteristics servicing for our school management practice by themethodologies of documents,compariation and history.According to half of the20th century of Western school effectiveness research,we caneasily find most of their research achievements have been used for practice and have succeed.Moreover,these successful experiences has an effect on other countries. Therefore,this studysuggests that our school effectiveness research should combine school practice,especially thepractice of school management. In particular,it should work in the following areas:First,establish the concept of the continuous development of school performance and strengthen theconstruction of school effectiveness;Second,form an effective school team to achieve schoolperformance by fostering team effectiveness;Third, play the teaching leadership of principalrole to improve school performance;Fourth,innovative school-based management and highlightthe characteristics of schools;fifth,improve the mechanisms of performance management andpractise the evaluation of objective management using feedback to make improvements anddevelopment.
