Cooperative learning, also called group learning, was advocated by the American educator David Knoots. It was originated in the early1970s, and achieved substantive progress in the United States and in the mid-1980s. It is a kind of teaching form based on cooperative learning groups and the teaching of dynamic system using the interaction between factors, and promote student learning in order to achieve the common learning objectives. It can effectively improve students’academic achievement, personal qualities and to promote their social skills and social emotional development. It can not only achieve the goal of teaching spoken English, but also help vocational education and training to achieve the goal.The purposes of this research is to teach spoken English by using cooperative learning method in the secondary vocational education to improve students’speaking ability and cultivate students’learning ability and personal quality. In the process of the present research, the author of the paper attaches great importance to the development of activity-based team work skills and cultivation of students’cooperative learning competence by giving rational instructions when necessary. When building cooperative team, the author provides each student with proper environment for oral English learning and helps them conquer different kinds of difficulties. She also helps them obtain good learning habits such as thinking actively, speaking bravely, practicing diligently and finally improve their ability to use language as well as enhance their general English competence.The research tool includes oral test and questionnaire. Through a one-year experiment of cooperative learning, we find that more than90percent of secondary vocational students believe that they have improved their oral English more or less. Over60percent of the students in our vocational school in cooperative learning think it can lead to a far-reaching significance. The results of this study demonstrate cooperative learning can not only improve their speaking ability, but also develop independent learning skills and English communication skills, and provide an effective teaching model for oral English class in secondary vocational schoolThis essay involves five chapters. It starts with background of research which consists of the development of cooperative learning and students’learning conditions. Chapter2illustrates the design of cooperative learning which deals with the theory, advantages compared to traditional oral teaching, some strategies and activities of cooperative learning. Chapter3gives the program of experiment. Chapter4focuses on the experiment procedures and the analysis of the result. And it ends with the conclusion and suggestions on future oral teaching.
