Cooperative learning, which is also called collaborative learning or joint learning, is a kind of teaching theory and strategy system rising in America in the 1970s and being developed substantially during the 1970s and the middle 1980s. Being one of the widely used classroom teaching modes in the worldwide, cooperative learing has become one of the maid trends of teaching theory and strategy in the contemporary era because of its unique originality, scientific theories, covering the shortage of class teaching and individual learning and the significant effect on improving students' study and non-intelligent qualities. It is helpful to students' study and social skills to apply cooperative learning in the oral English teaching in the vocational school.In order to explore whether the learners who have received cooperative learing instruciton can perform better than those in control groups in their oral ability, learning ability and cooperative ability, the author implemented cooperative learning method in oral English teaching of PETS(Public English Teaching System) level 2in a vocational school. The experimental class received the cooperative learning while the traditional frontal instruciton method was used in the control class. The experiment lasted one year, altogether 70 students involved in it. Through the analysis of the data collection, which including two oral test and tape scripted, the questionnaires before and after the experiment and an interview with students. The author finds out most students benefit a lot from cooperative learning method.There are three experiental hypotheses in this thesis:1. Compared with the traditonal frontal intruction method, cooperative learing is helpful to creative a kind of equal, democratic and cooperative class atmosphere and to strengthen students'learning motivations and strategies obviously. Students' automonous learning ability will be improved.2. Compared with the traditional frontal intruction method, cooperative learning will enable studnets to improve their oral English grealty in the aspects of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, interactive communication and fluency.3. Compared with the traditional frontal instruction method, cooperative learning is helpful to cultivate students' cooperative spirit and improve students' alibity to relate to others effectively.The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One gives a brief introduction on the research topic and the outline of the whole thesis; Chapter Two is about literature review which provides theoretical support for the thesis; Chapter Three reports the design and implement of the experiement; Chapter Four shows the experimental results and data analysis; Chapter Five gives a conclusion and some suggestions about using the cooperative learning method in future oral teaching.The author finds that the cooperative learning plays an positive role in improving students'oral english, english learning ability and cooperative ability. At the same time, the author also gives some teaching suggestions about the problems in the research.
