Poetry teaching has always been an important part in teaching Chinese language andliterature. By probing into some theoretical works and related essays, as well as casestudies in real classroom teaching, this paper brings up some different ideas concerning thecurrent poetry teaching. It contends that the tradition of poetry education should be upheldand more emphasis be placed upon poetry education in the teaching of Chinese languageand literature in high school, where poetry education is generally neglected. By focusingon the wrong teaching methodology like “substituting emotion-oriented understandingwith rational analysis,”“one-dimension elucidation over multiple explanation,” and“utilitarian thought replacing aesthetic appreciation,” this paper endeavors to elucidate aproper orientation and method to teach poetry by showing that poetry teaching, animportant medium bearing the humanistic spirit in Chinese language and literature, makesan effective means to realize aesthetic education. It proposes that teachers should valuestudents’ reading experience in teaching, and reach the teaching goals through the threephases of reading, appreciation, and writing. Through improving poetry teaching in highschool in this manner, we will not only contribute to Chinese cultural inheritance and therefinement of students’ noble mind, as well as their aesthetic education, but also renderteaching itself poetic and artistic.
