Competency model is often used in modern management and managementpsychology. In recent years, Competency Movement in education is gradually inflourish. Domestic Scholars had made explorations on competency models of teacherswhich mainly focused on school teachers, whereas the researches on teachers incolleges and universities are relatively limited. The teachers in universities are not justthe important resources but also the critical factors of personnel training and socialdevelopment. For this reason, to construct the competency model for teachers inuniversities is of great significant.Based on the present achievements, and taking S the key multiversity as anexample, the competency model of teachers in colleges and universities was constructed.Firstly, the study was preliminary discussed on the job content and behaviorcharacteristics of university teachers by employing the methods of reference analysisand unstructured interview. Then, a preliminary competency model of teachers incolleges and universities was established by interviewing19university teachers, andsome unique competencies for university teachers were explored in comparison with thecompetency model of school teachers. Furthermore, in the perspective of collegestudents, the study worked out a survey questionnaire on the competency of universityteachers and investigated680university students so as to verify the rationality of theprevious model. Finally, the paper discussed the current situation of human resourcemanagement in university and teachers’ self development, and gives advice on teachers’own rise and the construction of teachers procession in universities.Main conclusionsare as follows: 1.The competency model of university teachers is consist of differentiatingcompetency and threshold competency. Differentiating competency includes9itemssuch as achievement, creativity, analytical thinking, flexibility, critical thinking,interpersonal understanding, social responsibility, team leadership and impact, while theother21items of threshold competency are reflection, conceptual thinking,communication, care students, relation building, teaching strategy, developing others,diligence, team work and so on.2.The competency model of university teachers can be divided into six competencycharacteristics of servicing awareness, personal quality, innovation, achievementorientation, social impact and research features.3.Compared to the competency of the school teachers, there are some uniquecompetency in the competency model of University Teachers including flexibility,critical thinking, impact, persistence, diligence, relation building, information seeking,active learning, research interest, concentration and social responsibility. Moreover,some common traits play distinct roles in the two models.
